Gavin Oxburgh
Gavin is a Professor of Applied Forensic Psychology at the School of Psychology, Newcastle University, where he is the lead Forensic Psychologist. He is one of the organisers of this conference.
Prior to academia, Gavin served for 22 years with the Royal Air Force Police where he specialised in child protection, domestic abuse and sexual offences, serving throughout the UK and across Europe. In 2007, he co-founded the International Investigative Interviewing Research Group (www.iiirg.org), a network of professional interviewers dedicated to improving interview techniques across the world.
He is a specialist consultant to the International Criminal Court and, in 2016, he was an invited expert to the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and now serves on an International Steering Committee in relation to the development of Universal Standards for Non-coercive Interviewing and Procedural Safeguards.
Gavin's research contributes to the broad area of forensic psychology including: International human rights; the investigative interviewing of victims, witnesses and suspected offenders (incl. vulnerability, culture, empathy, and rapport-building); false and recovered memories, and; (cyber) crime in the cloud. In 2017, he was appointed as an associate investigator of the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR) which is EPSRC and GCHQ managed.
